"Book & A Beer Club"

Escondido, San Diego County, CA ---QUESTION: Does your book club have beer, and does your beer time include discussion of great books? ANSWER: You'd be a lot cooler if they did. Not to worry. To boldly demonstrate that great beer and lively intellectual discussion are the best of companions, Stone Brewing Co. invites beer geeks and bookworms alike to participate in its first open-to-the-public meeting of Book & A Beer Club On the Grass. The basic concept is a familiar one: A diverse group of interested individuals pick a book to peruse and ponder, and then meet for a discussion of the material. If this seems suspiciously similar to the type of activity enjoyed by little old ladies at the neighborhood Rec. Center, guess again. Instead of tea and biscuits—32 taps of beer and Arrogant Bastard Onion Rings! Imagine the possibilities...

Books chosen will typically reflect Stone Brewing Co.'s interest in (and commitment to) all things innovative, healthy and remarkable, from business to food to the environment to—of course—beer. This month, participants will be reading Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma, in which the author examines what he calls "our national eating disorder". In this remarkably fascinating book Pollan takes the reader on an incredible journey everywhere up and down the food chain, from the corn fields to the fast food drive-through, and from the forests to the home grown (and hunted and foraged) meal.

Now, for those traumatized by memories of high school English classes where such "discussions" were little more than a gathering of slack jaws and blank stares, rest assured Stone CEO Greg Koch has taken care to eliminate the possibility of awkward pauses by inviting guest participants. Such individuals are chosen based on their expertise and creativity in related areas. For June, the two guests will be David Bronner, President of the world-famous Dr. Bronner's, makers of all-natural organic soaps & lotions, and Barry Logan, proprietor of La Milpa Organica Organic Farm. Both businesses are located in Escondido.

The evening will kick off with a 30 minute mix and mingle session beginning at 5:30pm, followed by the discussion of the book at 6:00pm. Guests are welcome to bring their own lawn chairs, and blankets will be provided for those without to keep you from grass-staining your chinos. Heck, we'll even discount draft beer for attendees — your lit' professors never did that for you! An RSVP is appreciated (though not required) at 760.471.4999 x1700.
