Head Brewer

APPEARANCE:
Nice warm color, medium brown.
AROMA:
Dry roasts, vanilla, toasty malts, and a little coffee & toffee.
FLAVOR:
Dry, roughness if too cold…let it warm a bit. Fruitiness of yeast/hops and a big hop bitterness in the mid that lingers & hangs with the roasty malts. Late coffee in the nose, exhale…mmm.
PALATE:
Dry – a little astringent at first…too cold? As it warms up the texture improves. Still a dry beer with deceptive alcohol content. I could drink this by the pint…slowly but steadily.
OVERALL:
I still have some in my cellar, and won’t rush to drink it soon. A nice change of pace from a lot of the beers I have regular access to.

Greg Koch

APPEARANCE:
Light brown with reddish hues and just slightly hazy.
AROMA:
Roasty-Toasty malts.
FLAVOR:
Roasty, roasty. Toasty, toasty…catch a theme going on here? Light phenols.
PALATE:
This brew really seems to have dried up a bit. Its relatively light body belies the 8.5% abv.
OVERALL:
I would have preferred more hops in this recipe, but hey, that’s no surprise to anyone. Flawless aging so far…but it is still quite young.

APPEARANCE:
Nice and clean (bright), medium reddish-brown, with decent CO2
AROMA:
A little coffee, a little doughy, the toffee and caramel notes are apparent…not much hop character…roasty.
FLAVOR:
Same burnt/roasty character as in the aroma. Still not getting the bitterness from the hops (maybe a little) Pleasantly complex and intriguing.
PALATE:
Alcohol is noticeable as it warms, but not too much. Medium body, kinda dry, but excellent lingering qualities. Like a nice chocolate you can taste an hour later…
OVERALL:
Exquisite! I wish I had more of this at home…but at least I’ll still be tasting it by the time I get there!

Eric Wallace

President, Left Hand Brewing Co.
APPEARANCE:
Beautiful tawny red, bright.
AROMA:
Nice toffee/malt notes with solid but subtle hoppiness. Herbal, cola, anise impressions.
FLAVOR:
Malty/sweet initial impression moves inexorably through cola, bitters, spices (nutmeg, more anise, and something else) to a prolonged hoppiness --- not a hit & run beer.
PALATE:
Soft and plump…lingers forever on the tongue. Some warming at the end.
OVERALL:
Tasting great and very satisfying! I dig the malt-hop counterpoint.
