San Marcos, San Diego County, CA --- On July 1st, 2003, BeerAdvocate.com released its first ever "Best of BeerAdvocate.com" list, with the top honor for "Best American Brewery" going to Stone Brewing of San Diego County.
BeerAdvocate.com, which got its start in 1996, is an extraordinarily popular gathering spot for beer enthusiasts of every kind. Boasting more than 13,000 users from nearly 100 countries, the site has beer statistics of every kind. Want to find the best places to go for beer in a given city? A quick search finds a comprehensive list with feedback and ratings from numerous BeerAdvocate members. Want to know which brewery produces what beers? Do a quick search and in moments you have your answer. How about reviews of beers? The site features better than 43,000 ratings of more than 6275 American beers.
BeerAdvocate.com has long maintained a "Top 50" list of the highest rated beers in the world, and Stone Brewing has consistently held an exalted position on this list. According to a June 2003 Los Angeles Times feature on Stone Brewing "BeerAdvocate.com's current list of the world's 50 highest-ranked beers includes five Stone products, and a sixth is on the verge of inclusion." That's the Top 50 in the world.

One might think that the opinions of the site's founders might weigh heavier in the rankings than that of a new member that has only been on the site for a few weeks. Not so. All voices, opinions, ratings and thoughts weigh equally in the system. "Once a member enters 20 ratings, their ratings get tabulated into the system and rank equally with everyone else's," explains Alstrom. "That's the beauty of the system, every member's opinion counts equally. Which is why we use the motto 'There are no beer experts, just beer drinkers with opinions.'"
